Keeping Roads Safe

Are You A Safe Driver?

Safe Drivers Are

…ARE PATIENT

There’s nothing worse than a traffic jam, especially if you are running late already. These frustrations often become anger and lead to aggressive driving. Don’t fall into that trap. Take a breath, relax and be patient.

…CHECK THEIR TYRES

Over inflated. Under inflated. Insufficient tread. Cuts, bulges or tears. Cracked and weathered. Tyres are often overlooked but they need regular checks and maintenance.

…LOOK OUT FOR CYCLISTS

Cyclists are one of our most vulnerable road users. They need space. Do not drive in cycle lanes and always give at least 1.5m clearance between your vehicle and the cyclist… MORE if you can.

…ARE CAREFUL IN THE COUNTRYSIDE

Some farmers are already brining in hay crops. Take extra care on rural roads. Motorcyclists especially need to think about rear overhangs on turning agricultural vehicles that can swing out a long way.

…DON’T DRIVE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRINK OR DRUGS

Drink and drug driving are still one of the biggest causes of fatalities on our roads. Is it worth the risk? The answer is NO!

…FOCUS ON THE ROAD

Distracted driving whilst using a mobile phone is one of the largest causes of fatalities on the roads worldwide. Put the phone where you can’t reach it, put it in drive mode or just turn it off.

…CHECK THEIR LIGHTS

Always make sure your vehicle lights are working and that they are appropriate to the conditions and time of day/night. Don’t always rely on automatic activation and remember that many cars don’t have rear lights when only the daytime running lights are on.

…HELP EMERGENCY VEHICLES

Emergency vehicles need fast and unhindered access to collisions. How fast they get there can be the difference between life and death. Make sure you know how to facilitate their progress in every road situation. We recommend the Blue Light Aware videos.

…KNOW THEIR CAR

What do all those lights on the dashboard really mean? Knowing what they mean and what you must do when they illuminate is vital for your safety and caring for your car. Take the time to understand them all.

…KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE

Nobody likes a tailgating driver. Whatever speed you’re driving at, ‘only a fool breaks to the 2 second rule’. Keep your distance and stay safe.
